Living in Belize
Experience Paradise
A former British Colony, Belize still maintains strong links with the United Kingdom to this day. Yet because of its geographic location in Central America Belize also benefits from cultural and economic influences from its Latin American and Caribbean neighbors.
Belize’s friendly climate means you can enjoy an active lifestyle year-round; there is no shortage of things to do. That friendly climate isn’t just the weather, it’s the welcoming and friendly nature of the Belizean people, too.
Fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables abound, and there’s an abundance of freshly caught seafood as well. This means that it’s easy and inexpensive to enjoy a healthy and local diet without paying the sort of pain-inducing prices you may be accustomed to at home. There’s nothing quite so refreshing and restorative after a day in the warm sun as a glass of freshly harvested coconut water!
Belize is also considered a very safe destination for investors, tourists and expats alike. Commonsense should of course prevail particularly in Belize City however, where it is advisable to catch a cab after dark and only ever carry small amounts of cash.
It is safe to travel to Belize with your family. Pristine beaches, the world’s second-largest barrier reef, vibrant jungles, ancient ruins, incredible caves, and more… This is Belize, and it’s a wonderful destination for families.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Belize is two thirds of what you would spend in Bermuda or the Bahamas, the highly popular resort areas of the Caribbean. A U.S. couple can live well for $2,000 a month, including rent, in Corozal, the Cayo, and Toledo Districts.
Everywhere in Belize, including the most expensive areas, you can easily find places to eat local, home cooked food for around $5. The national dish in Belize is stewed chicken, rice, and beans, usually with a plantain. Some people eat it every day and it is readily available at every food stand and restaurant for $5. Imported liquor and wine is expensive, but you will find local beer, rum, and vodka at bars for only $2 to $3 per drink.
